How To Protect Your Car from Hail

August 4, 2022

The spring and summer bring nice weather. However, thunderstorms, especially in states such as Texas, often bring more than little water. When the storms get powerful enough, the rain can turn into hailstones, which can cause damage to your vehicles. It doesn’t take much for damage to occur to unprotected property. There are some steps you can take to help shield your vehicle from hailstorms.

Protecting Your Vehicle From Hail

Protecting your car from hail damage is easy if you know what to do. The damage that can be brought on by a hurricane is difficult, or almost impossible to prevent. If you have a garage, obviously you’ll want to ensure you move your vehicle in when you know a storm is coming.

Watch the Weather

You can always keep yourself up to date with the weather via weekly forecasts and weather apps. Awareness is key to preventing any damage to your property. While weekly forecasts may not be of much assistance on an hour-to-hour basis, they can help you get an idea of what to expect in the coming days.

Weather apps can give you real-time updates, weather alerts, and severe storm warnings. You can easily download one of many apps right to your smartphone.

Use a Carport

If you were ever wondering, "How can a steel carport protect my car in a storm," it is probably the best way to protect against hail damage. This is especially true if you don’t have a garage. Every home doesn’t have a garage, and only a few apartment buildings offer one.

A carport can be a great option. They can be built for less than an entire garage and can even be built in places where a garage may not even be possible. Depending on the size of the roof, a carport may not always provide complete coverage. You should always be in the center and away from the edges when using a carport to protect from storms.

Additionally, you can even purchase a car cover. If you don’t have a structure to build a carport, a purpose-made car cover can offer a reasonable amount of protection from hail. A basic car cover is relatively thick and can be created to your vehicle’s specifications. They can also be applied quickly, so you can throw them on as soon as you notice hail in the forecast.

Use Floor Mats

If you are in a situation where you don’t have shelter, a car cover, or blankets, you can use floor mats. There are thick pieces of rubber, plastic, and carpet that can provide a great level of protection when preventing your vehicle from hail damage. However, the only con to this method is that there really isn’t a way to cover the entire vehicle. In this case, it is best to utilize floor mats to protect the most fragile parts of your car, such as the windows.
